A guide to the Romanesque churches of Sober (Ribeira Sacra, Galicia)

The cultural association Colado do Vento  publishes a guide to the Romanesque heritage of Sober, a  municipality in the province of Lugo. This brochure (16 pages, available only in Galician) describes the medieval churches of the parishes of Bolmente, Canaval, Lobios, Pinol and Proendos.

The rich artistic symbolism of these monuments was analyzed by the writer and historian Xosé Lois Garcia in his recent book Simboloxía do románico de Sober (in Galician), published by the Ministry of Culture of the Xunta de Galicia.

Sober medieval churches are just a small part of the vast monumental heritage of the Ribeira Sacra, a cultural-geographic region consisting of twenty municipalities in the provinces of Lugo and Ourense that is characterized by the highest concentration of Romanesque art in Galicia. A map published by the Ecomuseum of Arxeriz (municipality of O Saviñao) indicates the main attractions of this great historical and artistic whole, strongly linked to an ancient wine tradition, which has already been proposed for the list of UNESCO World Heritage.
