December 10: Dried Chestnut Festival in the Courel Mountains (Galicia)

  For the last thirteen years the village of Froxán celebrates the Festa da Pisa da Castaña, an ethnographic and gastronomic festival which recreates the ancient method of preparation of dried chestnuts used for centuries in the Serra do Courel, a mountain range in the east of Galicia.
  First, the chestnuts are dried with wood smoke in a stone building called sequeiro (drying place). The dried chestnuts are then stored in a bag and beaten against a log. Finally, the chestnuts are shaked in a kind of winnowing basket called bandoxo in order to detach the skins. You can see the whole process in this video.
  European chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) are very important in the traditional culture of the Serra do Courel. In these mountains are some of  the largest and oldest chestnut forests of Galicia, which are otherwise characterized by high biodiversity. Chestnuts are a main ingredient in local cuisine and chestnut wood is widely used in construction and craftmanship. The region has several small companies that manufacture and sell dried chestnuts,  chestnut jams and chestnut cakes.  
  The Serra do Courel is also the homeland of the great Galician language poet Uxío Novoneyra, whose literary work is largely inspired by the landscapes and traditions of this region.

A new geological and paleontogical museum in Quiroga (Galicia)

  The opening of the first Galician museum devoted exclusively to geology and paleontology is scheduled for December 2. This museum is located in the municipality of Quiroga (province of  Lugo) and was created with the scientific advice of the Institute of Geology of the University of A Coruña. The new museum is located in the vicinity of the Courel Mountains and the Campodola Syncline (or Courel Fold), which is considered as one of the major sites of geological interest in the Iberian Peninsula.

  The museum has several sections devoted, respectively, to the Campodola Syncline, geological traces of the last glaciation (that are visible especially in the valley of A Seara), Quaternary fauna, Paleolithic settlements and the mining activity developed in this region since Roman times. From the outset, the museum will exhibit collections of minerals and fossils and later will also feature Paleolithic artifacts.

Exploración de la laguna subterránea de Ceza (Serra do Courel)

En el otoño de 2011 se cumple un año desde la última exploración del lago subterráneo de la cueva de Ceza, una de las numerosas cavidades kársticas de la Sierra de O Courel (Galicia). Buceadores de Axena (Asociación Xuvenil para o Estudo da Natureza) intentaron llegar al fondo de esta sima inundada, todavía muy mal conocida. El lago fue explorado por primera vez en 1995 por el Grupo de Investigación y Espeleología (GIPE). En 1996, el Grupo Espeleológico Ártabros realizó un estudio más amplio del lago, que recibió el nombre de esta asociación: GESA.
Los buceadores de Axena alcanzaron una profundidad de trece metros bajo  la superficie y no lograron divisar el fondo, ya que el agua (9 ° C) no tardó en enturbiarse. Según su estimación, el pozo tiene una profundidad de al menos veinte metros. La exploración se puede ver en este breve documental.
Ninguna de las exploraciones realizadas hasta el momento llegó a detectar rastros de actividad biológica en la laguna. En opinión de los espeleólogos, estas aguas podrían albergar quinorrincos o alguna otra especie propia de de los ecosistemas acuáticos subterráneos.

Exploração da lagoa subterrânea de Ceza (Serra do Courel)

No outono de 2011 completa-se um ano sobre a última exploração da lagoa subterrânea da caverna de Ceza, uma das numerosas cavidades cársticas da Serra do Courel (Galiza). Mergulhadores da Axena (Associação Juvenil para o Estudo da Natureza) tentaram atingir o fundo desta gruta inundada, ainda muito mal conhecida, explorada pela primeira vez em 1995 pelo Grupo de Investigações e Práticas Espeleológicas (GIPE). Em 1996, o Grupo Espeleológico Ártabros levou a cabo uma exploração mais demorada da lagoa, que recebeu o nome desta associação: GESA.
Os mergulhadores da Axena atingiram uma profundidade de treze metros por debaixo da superfície e não chegaram a avistar o fundo, pois as águas (9º C) não tardaram a tornar-se barrentas. Segundo a sua apreciação, o poço tem quando menos uma profundidade de vinte metros. A exploração pode ver-se neste breve documentário.
Nenhuma das explorações realizadas até agora chegou a detectar rastos de actividade biológica na lagoa. Na opinião dos espeleólogos, estas águas poderiam albergar quinorrincos ou alguma outra espécie aquática própria dos ecossistemas subterrâneos.
